Older Iowans Legislature Announces Key Policy Issues

The Older Iowans Legislature (OIL) held its annual meeting on Sept. 24-25 in the House Chamber of the Iowa Capitol to bring members, elected officials and advocates together to discuss and debate issues important to aging in Iowa. Led by OIL Chair Helene Magee, the meeting included speeches by State leaders and agency directors, as well as the presentation of the Lahoma Counts Memorial Award to Rep. Dave Heaton in recognition of his tireless advocacy for policy benefiting older Iowans.

The meeting culminated by selecting the final topics for the 2018 Priority Bills. These include:

  1. Enactment of an Elder Abuse Law based on proposed legislation supported by the Attorney General during the 2014 Legislative Session of the Iowa General Assembly.
  2. Support for legislation providing assistance to older Iowans who want to make home modifications in order to stay in their homes.
  3. Expansion of the Future Ready Iowa Act to include the direct care workforce.
  4. Enactment of the Iowa Care Act to help family caregivers.
