Health, Prevention & Wellness
Pursuant to the Older Americans Act, the Iowa Department on Aging administers health, prevention and wellness programs to ensure older Iowans are informed about and have access to services and evidence-based activities that can significantly improve their health, function and quality of life and reduce the need for more costly medical interventions.
With projections for Iowa’s aging population to grow significantly over the next several decades, the Department is especially interested in keeping older adults healthy (with an emphasis on good nutrition and access to healthy food), promoting preventive health services (including chronic disease self-management), addressing issues that limit access to care and increasing awareness about falls prevention (among older adults, falls are the leading cause of death due to unintentional injury).
The Department provides resources to the aging network about various disease prevention and health promotion initiatives through its website and participation in statewide events and disseminates information to the public through local activities and www.LifeLongLinks.org.
